There’s a quote from Rachel Zoe I keep seeing, “Style is saying who you are without having to speak.” I don’t disagree, but I keep thinking there ‘s another side of this that isn’t so examined.
Hiding in plain sight.
Style is, indeed, a personal expression, but I’m not convinced it isn’t your own version of cloak and shadows, too.
Long tousled bangs are sexy, but, oh, isn’t it easy to veil yourself? Peer carefully, wickedly through the strands?
Sunglasses are one of the chicest things you can don, the ultimate mask. The simplest armor is the most powerful sometimes, completely hiding the eyes. What lies behind them? An eyeroll? A tear? Surprise? Only a finely arched brow or slight curve of painted lips may give you away.
The power coat. With the right force of will, and a healthy dose of borderline violent energy, a coat can become a shield, not of elements, but accessibility. Add sunglasses and a dominant walk, and it’s possible you become impenetrable.
There’s something safe about “unreachable”, be it invisible walls we construct to protect the heart or sartorial weapons we wield to face the meeting, or the date, or, simply, to survive the airport, the inbox, or the day. We watch celebrities wield it daily. And, Zoe is right – with the right choices, there is no need to speak, because the message is clear.
You may look, but, unless you are known, you may not see.
Have a good weekend, friends — xo
