I was having a discussion the other day about seasonal drinks of choice. For instance, I prefer Gin & Tonic with lots of lime, but only in warm weather. I love big, bold red wines, but only in cold weather. I’m not a beer girl, unless it’s mexican food and summer time.
Around Kentucky Derby time I get a taste for bourbon. This year I bought some and drinking it instantly reminded me of some good college memories. (Also the time that an entire bottle of Jack spilled in my trunk and it smelled for a month. But still, good times.)
It occurred to me that my drink of choice in college is not my drink of choice now. How has yours changed? What was your drink of choice in college? What is it now?

Freshman year of college, amaretto sours and goldschlagger shots. (Ick!)
The rest of college, cheap-ass beer.
Now, I drink a few fancy beers, vodka sodas with lots of lime, white wine in the summer, red wine in the winter, bubbly wine year round. And I do love a good margarita.
(Man, do I sound like an alcoholic or what?)

I was an Amaretto sour girl, too. Still am from time to time. Very retro.

Gosh, I like it all. I would say my tastes are a bit more refined than they were college though. Back then I would drink darn near anything. Really bad beer, mainly. Hubby turned me on to Captain and Coke…which he still drinks all the time.
Now I mix it up between great wine, good flavorful beer, and the occasional yummy cocktail. At the moment I’m sucking down a Mondavi Riesling and it hits the summer evening spot. If I were having a big steak I’d go for a full bodied Cab or Malbec. I love me a well done Cosmo or Margarita. And Saint Arnolds Fancy Lawnmower or Texas Wheat hits the spot most weeknights.
Hm, I sound like a total lush. Which is funny since I rarely drink in excess.

No, you are right. Drinks now are for flavor more than for “drunk”. I wish I had more of a taste for beer, actually. Perhaps I need to try more kinds and expand that palate – beyond boiling shrimp in it.

I’m with you on the seasonal thing. Wrote about some of my faves just last week in fact: http://www.baptistwineclub.com/2010/05/favorite-summer-cocktails.html
In college, I love love loved Mailbu & Cranberry. But really at a Baptist college, anything alcoholic was illicit, so we took what we could get. Usually Strawberry Hill or something like that.
Now, red or white wine anytime of the year. And of course, G&Ts, etc.

Malibu! Man, how did I forget about that one?! Loved that with pineapple juice in college. And I can still make a good Painkiller.
But Strawberry Hill? Oh, Knighton…

Baptist + poor = strawberry hill. *le sigh*
We know better now.

I’m pretty sure Strawberry Hillmakes the baby Jesus cry. Yay for education.

College- probably beer or shots by default since that was what was available and free at the parties
Now- white wine, champagne, and margaritas depending on the meal

Oh, the shots. Yes, I remember that. Wait. I’m pretty sure I do.
I love a great margarita. Really fresh – but finding one without orange in it is damn near impossible. I need a margarita substitute.

Best margarita I ever had was made fresh in Cabo. Fresh squeezed key limes & Hornitas on ice. Nothing else. Heavenly.
