Political ramblings

February 12, 2008

For the first time in my life I saw a political ad this morning.

This is not shocking to the rest of the country, but it’s rare down here in Texas. No one spends money on ads in Texas. We’re a red state with a few pockets of blue. It would be a waste of money to buy air time down here. And, quite frankly, I prefer it this way.

But this morning Obama was on my TV set. And I was shocked.

I guess for the first time in a very long while Texas’ delegates for the democrats (poor bastards) are a focus. And because of that now I get Obama. At 7:15 in the morning.

There are other ways I’d wish to start my day.

Like many other voters, I’m not particularly thrilled with the field this time around. Don’t get me wrong – ain’t no WAY I’ll be voting democrat. There is nothing on that side of the aisle that lines up with what I believe or how I see this country. And I’m seriously considering putting up some stuff on CafePress that reads “Anyone but Her”.

But I digress.

I have a problem with McCain. He is not a conservative. And he’s reached across the aisle a few too many times to people I have no interest in working with (cough, cough, Kennedy, cough cough, Feingold). But, man. Not her. And not him.

The only difference between her and Obama is personality. And I’ve gotta give it to him, he is the textbook case of a quintessential charismatic leader. And I will say that that video was very well done. Didn’t say much, but very well done.

I’ve listened to democrats whine for YEARS that the country is broken. We suck. It’s awful. We’re terrible people. The world deserves to hate us. We should all be victims.

I used to believe that. I was a democrat. Then I grew up and accepted responsibility for my world.

I don’t accept it. This is a great country. The finest in the world. And, quite frankly, I prefer the optimism of the conservative party. Anything can happen here if you get off your ass and go get it. It happens every day.

Are there things that need repairing? Sure.

They’d get fixed a helluva lot faster if the government would get the hell out of the way. There are smart people here. Dedicated people. Don’t kill their drive with disincentives.

Are there people who genuinely need help? Yep. And they deserve it.

And this country gave billions in charity last year. $295 billion to be exact.

Can one vote make a difference. Absolutely.

Government is run by those who show up.

Go show up.

And get that man off my TV screen.

I agree with much of what you say. Not all, but much of it. I particularly agree with your comments about taking responsibility.
As for getting him off your screen? He’ll be gone from the TV soon enough.
    Until the inauguration, that is.

What she said – Anyone but Her!
