Well, Maria has arrived! An hour and a half early. The dog is so happy she can’t stand it. More hands to pet her.
Since I’m new at this whole “Hi, welcome to my home” thing, I thought perhaps I’d figure out a way for us to get to know each other and make her feel welcome. So, after the grand tour of the house (which took, oh, 4 minutes), we made a grocery list together so that I would know what she liked to eat and she might get a sense of how we live.
This effort was nothing short of comical. Her English is about as good as my Spanish these days. There were hand signals involved. And perhaps some illustrations. And I’m pretty sure Husband and I used the phrase “como se dice…?” about 100 times in 20 minutes. But, we got through it and I now know that she prefers to eat and snack healthily. And that we both share a love of ice cream.
I knew I picked the right one.
The Swimmy is curious, but not antagonistic. She asked several times where Maria was and what she was doing and I encouraged her to go find her and talk to her, which she did. There was a lot of giggling and waving, but I think they’re off to a good start.
This woman is not going to be terribly busy for the next month or so, but I think easing into this whole deal is still the way to go. And with time, I’ll relinquish a little more responsibility to her. Shit, I’ll have to. My mobility these days is getting worse and my brain power is dwindling daily. Want proof? Here ya go:
Things I Did Today to Highlight The Stupid:
1. Smack my head on the top of the car trying to get out of the driver’s seat.
2. Put the ice cream in the refrigerator. And the strawberries in the freezer.
3. Desperately search for my cell phone. That was in my left hand.
4. Miss several exits on a freeway. Twice.
5. Fall asleep in the bathtub.
I think that’s enough for one day, wouldn’t ya say? Welcome to the family, Maria! I’ll try my best not to scare the shit out of you with The Crazy or The Stupid.
